Abstract

Regeneration of a large number of green shoots and plants from barley somatic embryoids were achieved by subculturing embryogenic callus on the modified MS medium supplemented either with 0.4 µmol dm-3 abscisic acid or with 3 µmo1 dm-3 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid. A high percentage of shoots (84%) which appeared on the regeneration medium with abscisic acid developed good root system, contrary to the low rooting (20 % of shoots) if the regulator tested in the regeneration medium was triiodobenzoic acid. Some of the possible effects of abscisic acid on somatic embryogenesis in cell culture have been discussed.
