Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the relationship between economic statecraft and the historical processes through which the United States established and maintained its position as a hegemonic world power. The theoretical framework of the thesis draws on theories of economic statecraft, structural power and institutional change in order to consider the evolution of economic statecraft as an instrument of American power and hegemony. Each of the four case study chapters looks at a different historical period, spanning from the early 20th to early 21st century.
