Abstract

Statistics of mesoscale eddies (distribution, lifespan, generation regions, kinetic energy levels, vertical structure), with >50 km diameter, in the south-eastern Indian Ocean were developed usingsatellite altimeter derived geostrophic velocity data. Preferential eddy generation locations wereidentified offshore Kimberly, Barrow Island, Abrolhos Islands, Perth Canyon, south of Albany, andEsperance associated with coastline irregularities that also included seasonal and inter-annualvariability. Cyclonic and anti-cyclonic eddies were preferentially located offshore and inshore of theLeeuwin Current core respectively, due to vorticity generation. In the Perth canyon region, cyclonicand anti-cyclonic eddies consisted of contrasting vertical distributions in chlorophyll.
