Abstract

This thesis presents a profit optimisation system for road freight carriers, featuring the examination of dynamically incoming transport requests. Marginal cost and prices are determined in terms of present and expected future demand with the objective of maximising profits for the current time-period.
The problem is formulated as a dynamic pick-up and delivery problem with time windows (DPDPTW} and an Adaptive Tabu Search heuristic has been proposed to solve the problem.
Case study results show that applying the system helps operators in selecting the most profitable requests, finding their 'niche markets' and increasing profit margins to up to 20%.
