Abstract

Data on dengue in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has lacked and this has contributed to uncertainty and a poor knowledge of its status and its epidemiology in the country for a long time. Using archival blood samples and those obtained in more recent decades including from the acutely ill patients we showed that dengue is hyperendemic in PNG, that possibly all the four serotypes of the causative virus (DENV-1 – DENV-4) have been transmitting in the country for a long time since 1959. It accounted for more than 40% of past arboviral infections and should be prioritized for intervention and control.
