Cyclic Loading of Offshore Wind Turbine Mono-Bucket Foundations in Sand

Abstract

This paper presents selected results from centrifuge model tests to investigate mono-bucket response under a range of load drainage conditions in dense to very dense sand. This involved development of apparatus to apply appropriate cyclic loading conditions, consideration of relevant scaling laws for drainage and assessing the potential role of water cavitation. The results suggest that mono-bucket rotational displacement and stiffness in dense sand is dependent on cyclic load frequency (or drainage conditions) and mode of cyclic loading (i.e. one-way or two- way).
