Abstract

Providing safe care for in-patients and reducing healthcare associated adverse events are among the most significant issues facing the current health care system in Saudi Arabia.
This PhD thesis examined the culture of patient safety in 15 public hospitals in Saudi Arabia to identify the factors affecting patient safety culture. Data were collected both quantitatively from 1100 participants and qualitatively from 30 in-depth interviews with hospital-based service providers.
Results demonstrate the importance of work context and respondents' demographic characteristics in improving patient safety culture. A new national health reform plans to improve safety culture should address these factors.
