Abstract

Culturally situated Health Professions Education (HPE) leadership development is required in the Pacific. Currently, promoted HPE leadership frameworks are embedded in Western paradigms. To guide a contextual leadership framework an interpretivist approach, qualitative case study was undertaken utilising Rich Pictures, reflective journals and Talanoa-interviews to capture nuanced perspectives of Pacific HPE leaders. Miles and Huberman’s analytical approach interpreted three leadership styles: the Bridge, Coconut Tree and Boat across seven purposefully recruited HPE leaders. Common themes related to Pacific culture, emotions, attributes, relationships and leader vision, leading to a conceptual Pacific HPE leadership framework, the PEARL, with potential global application.
