Computing sediment transport with HEC-6 in the Paraná River, Argentina

Abstract

This work is partially concerned with gathering some of the few available data related to the sediment carried by the Paraná River. Those data are used to estimate the total bed sediment transported by the river through the computer program HEC-6. Therefore, part of the effort is concentrated on developing a
sediment rating curve for the Paraná River. Previous attempts from the authors to approximate the sediment rating curve with transport formulae were discouraging. Consequently, the gathered data is further employed
to test the predicting capabilities of some formulae in the Paraná River. Two approaches are followed to judge their reliability: the classical comparison between observed and calculated values, and a mechanistic analysis based on the relative magnitude of the celerities at which disturbances on the water surface and on the bed propagate. Finally, some preliminary results generated with HEC-6 are presented for a study reach of the Paraná River.
