Abstract

This thesis explored the feasibility of combining clinical hypnosis and cognitive behaviour therapy(CBTH) in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Firstly, an updated meta-analysis reconfirmed that CBTH significantly improved standalone treatment outcomes of CBT, especially in the treatment of pain disorders, depressed mood and obesity. CBTH was then applied to MDD via group therapy using a new treatment manual. While a small sample may have precluded significant differences being found overall, the CBTH Completer sample displayed a significantly larger response to treatment and rate of remission on the PHQ-9 at 12-month follow-up compared to CBT.
