Abstract
Sepsis is a life threatening complication of infection. Prompt treatment saves lives, but early sepsis can be difficult to recognise in the emergency department. This research investigated novel ways to improve sepsis diagnosis and treatment. One feature of sepsis is changes in how small blood vessels in tissues function in response to inflammation. This aspect was studied by measuring blood markers, and by bedside tests of the oxygen levels in muscle. This led to the successful implementation of a
clinical trial to investigate the effects of intravenous fluid, a common treatment in sepsis, on these pathways.
