Abstract

About 12% of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions is methane produced by ruminant livestock. To reduce methane production using ways that are compatible with modern markets, we are searching for solutions based on natural compounds produced by plants. In this thesis, I have studied two essential oils produced by Australian native plants, Melaleuca ericifolia and Melaleuca teretifolia, and found that both compounds inhibit rumen microbes that produce methane. With further research, we should verify that both essential oils can be used in grazing systems by introducing Melaleuca, or can be used in pure form in diets formulated for intensive farming.
