Centrifuge modeling of the horizontal capacity of skirted foundations on drained loose sand

    Abstract

A series of centrifuge model tests of the loading capacity of skirted foundations on drained loose sand was carried out. The test were carried out to investigate the combined vertical, horizontal and moment loading response of skirted foundation on drained loose sand. It was found that the horizontal capacity of the skirted foundation was increased to about 3-4 times that of raft foundation because of the skirts. The results also indicate that the foundation failure mechanism changed to a rotational mode instead of a sliding mechanisms occurring.
