Abstract
The word “lentil” is derived from the Latin word “lens,” which was used subsequently to designate a specific genus. This is one of the oldest cultivated crops, grown in harsh and cool environments. The genus Lens has been differentiated from the tribe Vicieae. This chapter details the botanical descriptions of lentil crops, including their history, separation of genus lens in the tribe Vicieae, morphological and molecular characterization of Lens species, origin, domestication, and evolution of cultivated species, and botanical features of domesticated species.
