Blue before red: understanding galaxy colour evolution with simulations and observations

Abstract

We explore the evolution of galaxy colours using a new method to reconstruct this evolution and validate it by testing with state-of-the-art theoretical models of galaxy evolution. We first show that our theoretical model can closely reproduce the optical colour distributions from our observations, which has proven challenging to other models. We then reconstruct the colour evolution from observations and devise a probabilistic description of the galaxy colour populations over cosmic time. Finally, we measure the timescale on which galaxies change colour, using our theoretical model to interpret the results from the observations regarding the physics driving galaxy evolution.
