Abstract

The aim of this multidisciplinary dissertation was to improve understanding of transgender and gender non-conforming populations, particularly children and adolescents. First, biological underpinnings were explored through longitudinal associations between androgen exposure in late gestation and gender nonconformity (GNC) in childhood and adolescence. Next, mental health outcomes of GNC were investigated for childhood, adolescence and adulthood. An additional study examined psychopathology and quality of life in transgender young people with autism, relative to transgender young people without autism. Finally, two systematic reviews investigated mental health outcomes and cognitive and physical effects for puberty suppression regimens and gender-affirming hormones and surgery.
