Abstract

This thesis investigates the place and role of ‘freedom’ in the anthropological concept of ‘becoming’
by exploring longitudinal case studies of four young Yemenis living life in a context of conflict and
intense political, cultural and social change. The analysis of the impacts of education, modernity,
mobility, and globalisation on their lives, contributes new insights into the concept of becoming in
scholarship, but also provides glimpses into a unique period of history in Yemen through the eyes of
young people who lived through the Arab Spring movement
