Abstract

The aim of this project was to evaluate the role of cardiac computed tomography scanning for coronary artery calcium score in the assessment of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis burden in asymptomatic subjects with familial and non-familial cardiovascular risk factors. The findings of this investigation could improve cardiovascular risk stratification of patients. Result are particularly relevant in those with familial hypercholesterolaemia, a monogenic disorder that leads to premature coronary disease. This may also be employed as a method for early identification and prompt treatment initiation, to personalise the intensity of treatment, increase the adherence to therapy, and triage further investigations.
