Abstract
Monitoring operations appropriate for underwater systems (UWS) and antisubmarine warfare (ASW) remains complex and severely challenging. USW professionals are tasked with evaluating suspected anomalies/alerts generated from parallel streams of data in real-time. The result is “information and cognitive overload”. This can lead to incorrect and sub- optimal decision-making. The system outlined here is a nuanced decision-making support tool successful field tested at both the ASX Surveillance Division and for Chevron machine condition monitoring. The performance of surveillance information systems depends on reducing the decision time for remedial action by accurately identifying, verifying and validating (V&V) alerts and generating actionable indicators, in context. This article discusses support and assurance of surveillance monitoring, and compliance validation and verification knowledge management of surveillance results. The aim is to support human analysts with information assurance real time alert identification, V & V, assurance and management decision making by tracking the parameters monitored by the existing information assurance monitoring infrastructure and operating work systems, and using that data/knowledge to create useful and actionable information. The goal is to reduce the (information assurance remedial action) time to decision to enable accurate and rapid operational execution based on real-time situation awareness.
