Application of terahertz imaging to osteoarthritis

    Abstract

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, caused by the breakdown of cartilage. A quantitative approach to monitor articular cartilage is a pressing need. Here, using a rabbit model, we investigate the potential use of terahertz pulsed imaging to determine the variation in cartilage thickness due to OA. We And that our terahertz image data can be used to quantitatively show variation in the cartilage thickness in excised tissue.
