Abstract

Revised version of a paper presented at the 7th National Mediation Conference, Darwin, 30 June-2 July 2004 - the legal significance of apology - concept of a "safe" apology in the context of civil disputes - psychological and ethical issues pertaining to apologies during mediation - risks associated with making an apology in the context of a potential or actual legal dispute - assisting mediators to understand and manage aspects of the risk involved in apologising.
