Abstract
The article is concerned with the changing significance of apocalyptic fire in aesthetic representations of the sky from Ancient Greece to contemporary film and installation art. It identifies religious, scientific and anthropogenic meaning and shows how the loss of public meaning to the sky has been recovered under tragic, contemporary circumstances.
