Abstract
Grady Venville and Jenny Donovan are both former science teachers now collaborating in science education research with a special interest in establishing appropriate student understandings of genes and DNA. Over the years, both have encountered many analogies and metaphors for genes and DNA from their reading and teaching. This paper brings these together and examines how their own concepts of genes and DNA have been enriched, and also comments on the potential usefulness of these analogies and metaphors for the teaching and learning of these important concepts.
