Abstract
Patient centred treatment goals (PCTG) are goals for an episode of healthcare expressed as a direct measure of how a patient feels, functions, or survives. This qualitative case study explored the concept of PCTG in patients undergoing elective surgery that involved critical care admission. The study found that participants could set PCTG but the goals seemed dependant on patient's emotions, confidence with the healthcare system or their frame of mind at that time. Therefore, it is uncertain that the participants knew what they wanted or could achieve from their episode of care.
