Abstract

This thesis documents the author's life history in education, from attending as a pupil, eight schools in four countries, through to his tertiary education. The author taught at schools in Perth for 19 years, including establishing a private, independent school. Using the interpretive research paradigm, the author discusses the external influence of international economic, social and political factors which, after passing through the hands of government and education departments, are shaped into pedagogical approaches, ranging from the child-centred to the teacher-centred. The author details how he dealt with those state-wide changes, imposed without reference to his experience at the chalk-face.
