Abstract

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is one of the most prominent frameworks used to help teachers teach with technologies. Recent research on TPACK has placed an emphasis on understanding Contextual Knowledge (XK), which accounts for teachers’ understanding of where teaching and learning are situated. As part of a larger research project, this case study delved into the development and integration of XK by five English language teachers across two secondary schools in Jogja, Indonesia—a city marked by noticeable technological advancements. The data were primarily gathered through in-depth interviews. Teachers’ lesson plans and digital teaching artefacts were also utilised to support the interviews. The findings suggest that even though professional development programs were frequently offered to teachers, teacher agency seemed to be a crucial factor in their XK development. Furthermore, a relational, collectivist culture emphasizing personal relationships seemed to greatly influence how XK was produced and enacted. Regarding the use of XK, even though the global and national context might have influenced their teaching practices, the classroom and school contexts were the major factors determining their pedagogical choices. Finally, due to the contextually bound nature of teaching, this study concludes by stressing the importance of incorporating XK into teacher education and continuous professional development. For pre-service teachers, the importance of XK could be introduced during their academic units and put into practice during teaching practicum. In addition, in-service teachers could benefit from Indonesia's current initiative, Komunitas Belajar, or Learning Community in developing their XK. The program allows English teachers at the same school to meet regularly and XK could be one of the topics to discuss. Since the study examined only a few teachers within the same district using interviews, future studies could examine a larger sample and compare regional contexts, as well as employ different methodologies, such as large-scale surveys.
