This mixed-methods research examined whether the decline in available clinical practice placements has impacted on individual paramedic airway management competency. The study aimed to identify whether Western Australian paramedics were receiving sufficient theoretical, practical and clinical straining. Findings from multiple sources revealed the infrequent utility of advanced airway management techniques and limited pedagogy has affected both confidence and success rates. Traditional education models do not appear to provide the required range of knowledge, understanding and performance opportunities required. A competency-based education programme has been developed from the research and should improve success races and competency.
