The Centre for Water Research at The University of Western Australia has developed a software suite, the Aquatic Real-time Management System and the Real-time Management System Online (ARMS-RMSO, http://www.rmso.com.au/), as a new tool for the sustainable management of rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal seas. It combines the integration of a number of technologies and approaches to enable the extraction of new levels of knowledge using arrays of sensors encompassing physical, chemical and biological measurements, providing data in real-time, models results and continuous information display to be used for scientific research, education, management and environmental policy-related applications. This paper provides an overview of the structure and components of the system and its implementation and approach taken for the Perth Coastal Margin, Western Australia (Australia), focusing on an integrated meteorological, surface waves, hydrodynamic and ecological model set. The system automatically generates short-term meteorological conditions, surface wave field, hydrodynamic circulation and physical and biogeochemical properties in real-time available via the World Wide Web (RMSO) for the purpose of monitoring the ecological health of the ecosystem and guiding recreational, management and research activities.
