A new look at compliance with procedures in safety critical industries

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to examine employee behaviours related to the use of safety procedures. Building on the integrative model of workplace safety (Christian et. al., 2009), I developed a model that accounts for employee behaviours associated with procedure use by incorporating the technology acceptance model as well as theories from engagement and emotional labour. Three inter-related studies using full-time employees wor ing in safety critical industries are presented. The thesis contributes to safety research by investigating multiple behavioural responses towards safety procedures (e.g. voice, deep and surface compliance), and uncovering the psychological mechanisms that drive those behaviours.
