Abstract

The Pilbara region of Western Australia contains a diverseand endemic ground water fauna dominated by crustaceans, withamphipods being a conspicuous component of many communities. Previousmorphological and molecular research has demonstrated the need forrevision of the current amphipod taxonomy. Specifically, examples of crypticspeciation and of morphological variation within single species suggest thata combined approach is needed to address the taxonomic gap. In this paperwe use molecular and morphological evidence to show the distinctiveness ofa new genus and species of stygobitic amphipod, Kruptlls lil1l1l1ei, known fromSpearhole Creek in the Pilbara.
