Abstract

This thesis presents a study on the B2-B19' martensitic transformation in NiTi shape memory alloys at different scales. It investigated the effects of point defects at the atomic level on the monoclinic angle of the B19'/B19" phase and revealed its structural flexibility; it studied a NiTi-Nb3Sn nanolamellae composite and demonstrated the effectiveness of the principle of “lattice stain matching” enabled by the martensitic transformation in inducing ultra-large elastic strains at the microscopic level; and it established a new theory and its mathematical model of the Lüders-type deformation behaviour of polycrystalline NiTi at the macroscopic scale and clarified a long-standing uncertainty.
