    Abstract

This chapter reveals the social mechanisms through which some state-society conflicts are resolved in China. Drawing upon the comparison between several purposely-selected cases, this chapter demonstrates that different social organisations play different roles in contentious politics in rural China. It also explains why certain social organisations are able to mediate the conflicts in local communities while others are not capable to do so. It argues the triangle relationship among the state, the social organisations, and the local society is the key to understand the dynamics of contentious politics in contemporary rural China.
