Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate national, religious and modern identities at explicit and implicit levels. Method: The method was correlational and the population of the study consisted of adolescents and youth in Mazandaran and Yazd from whom 168 participants were selected through convenience sampling. For collecting data at explicit level, national identity, religious identity (Rahimi nejad & Ahmadi, 2005) and modern identity questionnaires (Hatami, 2011) were applied. For assessing identities implicitly, Implicit Association Test (Nejat, 2011) was used. Results: Correlation outputs revealed a significant positive relationship between national and modern
identities at explicit and implicit levels. Also there was a significant negative relationship between national and religious identities with modern identity at explicit level, although no significant relationship was found at implicit level. According to the ANOVA results, at explicit level, women obtained significantly higher scores than men only in religious and national identities.
At implicit level of identity assessment, significant difference was found only in higher scores of Mazandaranis’ youth modern identity. Conclusion: These results can help us in better
understanding of the current structure of Iranian youth and adolescents’ identity and be applied in effective educational
programs regarding identity.
