Citation in "Last Words of the Condemned: Christian-Humanist Rhetoric in the American Abolition Debate"

Prize: Other distinction

Description

Citation in Footnote 120: Laurent Shervington points out that Freud defines the fetish as the last thing one sees before castration (in the essay ‘Fetishism’), with Donald Trump becoming for Slavoj Žižek ‘the last thing one sees before class struggle’. The last words are, then, the last words before death, suggesting that ‘both liberal humanist and pro-death penalty camps prefer to remain in the zone of the fetish than have to reconcile with the unassimilable place of death’ (Personal
communication).
