Awarded “best paper published in CHIECO in 2019” by the editorial board. While China’s recent development has advantaged workers who have migrated to the modern sector, technical change that saves low-skill labour is very prominent in China, as in the advanced economies. Inequality has been rising because of the increasing rural-urban divide, but also because of this technical change.
