Dr. Zhaoyu Li was initially trained as a biochemist during his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. studies. Dr. Li started his research during his M.S. studies on cell signaling and liver cancer under the supervision of Prof. Zhaochun Cui at the Dalian Medical University. Dr. Li received his Ph.D. training on lipid metabolism and liver diseases under the supervision of Prof. Dennis E. Vance at the University of Alberta. Then he moved to the University of Pennsylvania to receive the training on liver development, liver cancer, genomics/epigenomics, and bioinformatics under the supervision of Prof. Klaus H. Kaestner. In 2012, with his K99/R00 award, Dr. Li started his independent research on functional genomics, quantitative epigenomics, and bioinformatics of tissue development and tumorigenesis in liver, breast, prostate, and esophagus at Mayo Clinic. Dr Li was also a PI in the NIH Roadmap Epigenomics project (R01).
Dr. Li currently is the Head of Cancer Research Cluster in the School of Biomedical Sciences and also a staff member of UWA Center for Applied Bioinformatics.
Teaching: SCIE5003 Advanced Bioinformatics and Data Analysis for Genomics
Dr. Li's current research at UWA focuses on cancer prevention from three aspects:
1. Developing novel approaches for breast cancer prevention;
2. Using sex disparities in liver cancer and esophageal cancer to prevent cancer occurrence;
3. Developing quantitative epigenomic datasets and toolkits for cancer prevention studies.
Dr. Li recently developed a new tool, NUCLIZE, to generate quantitative epigenomic data of histone modification at single nucleosome resolution and identify the patterns and potential epigenetic codes that regulate gene expression in human cells.
Here are the workflow, datasets, and other information regarding NUCLIZE (link).
Dr Li's laboratory is now opening positions for MS and PhD students, research assistant, research associate, and postdocs in genomics, epigenomics, bioinformatics, and machine learning.
