Biography

Professor Yee Leung is a Gynaecologic Oncologist who graduated from The University of Western Australia (UWA) Medical School in 1984. He currently serves as Clinical Academic, Head of UWA Medical School’s Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical Co-Director of Gynaecology and Consultant Gynaecologic Oncologist at the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS), and Primate Gynaecologist for the Perth Zoo.

He has a teaching responsibility for UWA Medical students and is an examiner for the MD3 students. He has also served as an external examiner for the University of Hong Kong Medical students.

Professor Leung’s research interests primarily focus on clinical research in cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer and is a site investigator for the National Gynae-Oncology Registry. He had a principal role in establishing the Western Australian Gynaecologic Cancer Biospecimen Bank in 2013. Samples from this bank have been used in collaborative international research producing important new information subsequently published in high impact journals. In his current role as Head of Division he supports the research team in the Division as well as actively encouraging clinicians to undertake research at WNHS through the newly established WNHS Research Hub.

His involvement in the National Cervical Screening Program includes being a member of the Clinical Advisory Group, as well as chairing Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) colposcopy quality improvement program and external agency initiatives aimed to eliminate cervical cancer in Australia, New Zealand, Western Pacific, Papua New Guinea and Timor.

His other interest is in surgical training and is Chair of the RANZCOG Gynaecologic Surgical Training Working Group. He serves an executive of the ACW (previously known as the Anatomy of Complications Workshop) which conducted over 150 workshops in the past 25 years including those held in Ireland and Singapore. CTEC at UWA recognised his outstanding contribution to surgical training with a Distinguished Service Award in 2025.

For his extensive service to RANZCOG over 25 years as an Examiner, Councillor, chair of the Guidelines Committee and on the Board, he was honoured with the President’s Medal in 2023.
