Personal profile

Biography

With a clinical and orthopaedic background, Xiaojun completed his PhD in Molecular Medicine at The University of Western Australia under the supervision of Professor Killugudi Swaminatha Iyer and Dr Kai Chen at UWA, and Associate Professor Haibo Jiang at The University of Hong Kong. His doctoral research examined how oxidative stress, mitochondrial quality control and autophagy regulate osteoclast formation and function. This work identified OXR1 as a regulator of osteoclast biology and a potential therapeutic target for osteoporotic bone loss and led to a first-named paper accepted in Nature Communications. His research has also been recognised with the ECTS New Investigator Award and the ANZBMS Outstanding Abstract Award. Xiaojun combines clinical insight into skeletal disease with expertise in molecular biology and applied bioinformatics. Building on these strengths, he is developing expertise in advanced imaging, which he combines with cellular studies and in vivo models to investigate bone metabolism and its regulation across molecular, subcellular, cellular and tissue levels within the bone marrow microenvironment.
