Biography

Van Ikin is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow with interests in science fiction (especially Australian science fiction), Australian literature, and creative writing. He reviewed science fiction and fantasy for the Sydney Morning Herald from 1983-2010, has been a judge for literary awards in the field, and has edited and published the journal Science Fiction: A Review of Speculative Literature since 1977. Key items from this journal have been reprinted in the I.O. Evans Studies in the Philopsophy and Criticism of Literature series from Wildside Press, co-edited with Damien Broderick: Warriors of the Tao (2011), Xeno Fiction (2013), and Fantastika At the Edge of Reality (2014). Van Ikin's interviews with Australian sf writers are collected in Other Spacetimes: Interviews with Speculative Fiction Writers (co-edited with Damien Broderick; Wildside Press 2015). Most notable awards include the inauguaral A. Bertram Chandler Award for Achievement in the Field of Science Fiction and Fantasy (1992), the William Atheling Jr Award for Science Fiction and Fantasy Criticism (1988, 2000), the UWA/Guild Excellence in Teaching Award for Postgraduate Supervision (2000), and the Peter McNamara Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Field of Science Fiction (2018).

Future research

Continue editing and publishing the journal Science Fiction: A Review of Speculative Literature; continue co-compiling the Annual Bibliography of Australian Literature for Literature, Critique, and Empire Today; explore means of publishing works of speculative fiction by John Kinsella.
