Biography

Dr Tom Volkman is a Paediatrician and Medical Educator with the University of Western Australia in the Division of Paediatrics at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH). Tom provides academic scholarship in teaching, research and leadership, with a focus on Refugee Health, Simulation and Indigenous health with a rural focus.

Tom graduated from the University of Tasmania Medical School in 2008 and has been a general paediatrician since 2017. He completed his paediatric training between The Townsville Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Royal Children's Hospital (Vic) and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (UK). He has a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare professionals' education (UWA) and has a strong interest in simulation education having completed training courses in Simulation Education in Queensland and Perth. Tom's main educational interest is in Simulation Education where he is the Co-director of the Perth Children's Hospital simulation service. He designs simulated activities for MD3 students. 

Tom began his academic career with the University of Melbourne as the Lead Clinical Teaching Fellow and then was the Paediatric unit coordinator at James Cook University based at Cairns Hospital. He was a rural paediatrician in Kalgoorlie and Regional Paediatrician in Cairns and Cape York before settling in Perth.  He currently works in the Department of General Paediatrics, Refugee Health and the Rural Paediatric Service at PCH. This includes outreach paediatric service to the Ngaanyatjarra communities of the Western Desert. 

Tom has completed academic qualifications in education, clinical medicine (Infectious Disease, Public Health/Tropical Medicine and Allergy) and Safety and Quality across universities in the UK/USA and Australia. 

Tom has an interest in Humanitarian Paediatrics after completing overseas missions to Pakistan and Haiti. 

Tom's research interests are primarily in Refugee Health, Paediatric Infectious Disease and medical education with a focus on Simulation. 

Dr Volkman’s leadership and advocacy roles include establishing the Australia and New Zealand Paediatric Simulation educators collaborative (SimPAC). He has sat on national advocacy groups in refugee health (Refugee Health Network of Australia (RHeaNA), Australian Refugee Child Health Network (ARCH).

 

Teaching overview

In the Division of Paediatrics Tom is a bedside tutor, lectures on Paediatric history/examination and Refugee Health and Advocacy, and is a member of the MD3 committee. 

He is an active APLS and Neoresus instructor.
