Personal profile

Biography

I am an aquatic ecologist focused on promoting sustainable and equitable ocean planning and management by producing evidence-based policy-influential insights and streamlining the development of indicators to mainstream the ocean's contribution to society. I collaborate with key stakeholders to streamline the application of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) to ocean systems (UNSD SEEA Ocean Working Group), and I am part of the Interim Advisory Committee of the Ocean Decade Programme on Sustainable Ocean Planning (SOP Programme).

My research and teaching interests include invertebrate ecology, invasion biology, marine management, and ocean accounting. In 2024, I joined the School of Biological Sciences to expand my teaching and research portfolio in these areas, focusing on creating meaningful learning environments for students and supporting early career researchers. Before UWA, I led the technical component of a $10 million interdisciplinary research hub based at the University of New South Wales, focused on actively contributing to sustainable transitions through scientific-informed decision-making and building capacity in local communities in 20 countries. Prior to this, I spent four years in sub-Saharan Africa, supporting countries in managing ocean resource use, mapping marine ecosystems, and monitoring their health. I have been involved in multiple projects focused on low-cost solutions for managing invasive species.
