Biography

Sebastian is a PhD candidate working with the Choi Mechanobiology Lab in the School of Human Sciences. Sebastian’s research focuses on the changes to cell adhesion and behaviour that allow cancer cells to negotiate the mechanical challenges of the metastatic cascade. Metastasis, whereby cells from a primary tumour spread to other tissues, is the primary cause of cancer-related death. Yet, how cancer cells survive the mechanical challenges of this journey remains incompletely understood. Sebastian utilises and designs various platforms to study each step of the metastatic cascade, drawing on collaborative expertise in 3D biomaterials, soft lithography, microfluidics and 3D image analysis. Adopting a transdisciplinary approach, Sebastian is collaborating with biomedical engineering (BRITElab, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research), bioengineering (Confinement Mechanobiology Lab, Mechanbiological Institute, National University of Singapore) and molecular and biochemistry (Park Lab, Yonsei University) groups to study the mechanobiology of metastatic cancers. Sebastian is supported by a Hackett Postgraduate Research Scholarship, The University Club of WA Research Travel Scholarship and the BioZone PhD Program.

Sebastian also works closely with other collaborators on projects focusing on stem cell, cardiac and airway mechanobiology, drug delivery, and tumour-immune interactions.

In addition to his research, Sebastian works as a Lecturer of Anatomy for UWA's Medical School and a Prosector within the School of Human Sciences.

Teaching overview

Sebastian has been teaching anatomy in the School of Human Sciences since 2017 and the Medical School since 2018. In various capacities, Sebastian facilitates undergraduate and postgraduate student learning of developmental, structural and functional concepts of anatomy using cadaveric material in laboratory sessions.

Sebastian joined the UWA Medical School in July 2023 as a Lecturer of Anatomy.
