Personal profile

Biography

Robbie is a PhD candidate investigating novel methods to measure microbial interactions - this work forms the basis for understanding how and why microbiomes develop, stabilise, deteriorate or ebb and flow. As a former intensive care clinician, Robbie saw the severe disease that antimicrobial resistant bacteria are capable of causing, and he developed a passionate research interest in antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial drug discovery, and host protective factors for colonisation. In 2021, he completed his masters dissertation with a first-class honours grade. Currently, Robbie is a research assistant for Assoc/Prof. Katherine Hammer.

Research interests

Antimicrobial resistance

  • Antimicrobial drug discovery
    • Exploiting the biodiversity of Australian native plants as a reservoir for novel antimicrobials.
  • Biofilms as a therapeutic barrier
    • Disruption/dispersal of biofilm as a major factor in antimicrobial resistant infections.
  • The microbiome as a protective factor
    • Identify bacteria associated with health and exploit these bacteria for probiotic purposes.
