Biography

Dr. Paul K. Bergey is Associate Professor in the School of Business at the University of Western Australia. He earned a Ph.D. in Management Science and Information Technology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), MBA from the College of William and Mary and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he attended by congressional appointment.

Roles and responsibilities

In Jan 2020, Dr. Bergey was appointed the founding Director of the Centre for Business Data Analytics (CBDA) in the UWA Business School.  Dr. Bergey also served as Head of Department for Management & Organisations from 2018-2019.  Dr. Bergey was Director of the Master of Information and Logistics Management program from 2016-2018 

Funding overview

In 2014, Dr. Bergey received a $315,000 grant from the University of Melbourne Business School, where he served as one of the founding board members of the Centre for Business Analytics, offering the first Master’s degree in Business Analytics in Australia. In 2015, Dr. Bergey served as Melbourne Business School's lead grant writer for a multi-university Innovative Manufacturing Cooperative Research Center (CRC) that was awarded $42 million to revitalize the manufacturing industry in Australia.

Prior to joining UWA, Dr. Bergey held academic appointments at the University of Melbourne, and the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University in the USA. He has held visiting fellowships at the University of Cambridge, UK (2014, 2015) and Tulane University, USA (2011) during sabbaticals.

Dr. Bergey has extensive industry experience as a project engineer at Newport News Shipbuilding and has consulted for government agencies and world class organizations such as the United States Department of Energy, The World Bank and Fortune 500 companies like Dominion Resources, Progress Energy and Becton & Dickenson.

Dr. Bergey’s research is focused on the application of mathematical modelling to support decision making on complex managerial issues.
