Biography

Prof. Paul Abbott AO is the Winthrop Professor of Clinical Dentistry at The University of Western Australia. He is a Specialist Endodontist and he also works in private practice on a part-time basis. Prior to taking a full-time University position in 2002, he spent 17 years in private specialist practice in Perth and Melbourne. He was Dean and Head of the UWA School of Dentistry and Director of the Oral Health Centre of WA from 2003-2009. Prof. Abbott has lectured extensively (over 1,000 lectures and courses) in 48 countries, has published over 225 articles in refereed journals and 25 textbook chapters. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the international refereed journal "Dental Traumatology" from August 2015 until December 2022. He has served on Editorial Boards and Scientific Review Panels of 17 other international journals. Prof. Abbott has served on many Committees and Boards including being the President of the International Federation of Endodontic Associations, President of the Asian-Pacific Endodontic Confederation and Federal President of the Australian Society of Endodontology. He was a Director of the Australian Dental Council from 2005-2009 and he was a Practitioner Member of the Dental Board of Australia from 2012-2021. In 2004, he was awarded the University of Western Australia’s Excellence in Teaching Award for Individual Teaching. In 2015 the University awarded him the Excellence in Teaching Award for Postgraduate Coursework Teaching. In 2016, he received an Excellence in Teaching Award for Large Group Teaching. In 2017 he received the University of Western Australia’s Excellence in Teaching Award for Research Supervision.  This latest award meant that Prof. Abbott has been recognised as an excellent teacher in all categories of teaching within the University of WA. He was nominated by The University of WA for a Citation Award as part of the Australian Government's Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) in 2017. Prof. Abbott was awarded by the UWA Student Guild for his teaching in 2014 and in 2015 he received a Commendation for Lifetime Achievement from the WA Clinical Training Network Team. In June 2015, he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in recognition of his services to clinical dentistry, teaching, research and professional societies. He has also been recognised internationally with the Venus International Foundation Award in 2019 (from India) and the Il Chirone Academia 2020 Award from Italy - both awards are for service to the profession, research and teaching in Endodontics and Dental Traumatology. He is an Honorary Life Member of the Asian Pacific Endodontic Confederation, an Honorary Member of the New Zealand Endodontic Society and the Sociedad de Endodoncia de Bogotá (Colombia), and a Life member of the American Association of Endodontists. Locally, he has been awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Australian Society of Endodontology (WA Branch), the University Dental Students Society, and of the national Australian Society of Endodontology Inc. He has also received awards from the Australian Dental Association Inc. in recognition of his long-term service to the profession – a Service Medallion in 2008 and the Distinguished Service Award in 2020. He also received a Distinguished Service Award from the WA Branch of the Australian Dental Association in 2022.
