Biography

Pan Hu obtained his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering at the Shenyang Jianzhu University, China in 2007. Following graduation he was enrolled as a Master student in Dalian University of Technology. In 2010, Pan started his PhD study in COFS working on predicting punch-through failure of a spudcan on sand overlying clay. Pan joined COFS as a Research Associate in 2014 immediately after the completion of his PhD.

Industrial relevance

As the offshore oil and gas industry continues to expand, it is important to ensure safe and economic use of jack-up rigs. My research was undertaken with the aim of seeking an improved understanding of the penetration of spudcan foundations in sand overlying clay. A rational and realistic framework for the jack-up industry to predict punch-through failure was proposed from this research. It is expected the outcomes of this research would assist the engineers in field to predict the potential for and severity of punch-through failure and guarantee the safe extraction of oil from the seabed.
