Biography

I am a Senior Research Scientist (Cientifico Titular) at the Estación Biológica de Doñana -EBD- (CSIC). Prior to that I was a Ramon y Cajal fellow, followed by Investigador Distinguido, at the same institute. I am also an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Centre for Evolutionary Biology (CEB, Univ. Western Australia-UWA). Previous to my return to Spain in 2012 I spent nearly 10 years in Australia, where I held several fellowships from the Australian Research Council and positions at the CEB and UWA (e.g., Australian Research Fellow / Assistant Professor). I lead a research group that focuses on the evolutionary ecology of interactions between males and females in a context of an always-changing world. My research has yielded relevant results in relation with the study of male and female adaptations to sexual selection and sexual conflict, the study of risk-spreading behaviour in the evolution of female multiple mating, the use of modified quantitative genetic designs to identify sources of (genetic and non-genetic) variation in fitness traits, or the study of male-driven environmental transgenerational effects on offspring life-histories. I have been the sole principal investigator in over a dozen of research projects and co-principal investigator in another 3. I have experience supervising young researchers, including PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers. I have produced over eighty publications of which more than seventy are peer-reviewed contributions. My research features in journals such as Evolution, Current Biology, Evolution Letters, Ann. Rev. Entomology, Ecology Letters, Nature Communications, Journal of Evolutionary Biology., Biological Review, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. B, etc. From 2012 to 2017 I was an Editor of the journal Behavioral Ecology (Oxford Univ. Press), and I sit on the editorial board of Journal of Ethology since 2011, and I am also Associate Editor of Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution (section Behavioral and Evolutionary Ecology). Some of my scientific responsibilities have included assessing competitive grant applications for funding agencies (including the US National Science Foundation, the UK Natural Environment Research Council, the European Commission, the Australian Research Council, Spanish Research Agencies, the Swiss National Science Foundation, or the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, among others), and I have been a regular reviewer for over 40 scientific journals including American Naturalist, Biological Reviews, Ecology Letters, Evolution, Evolution Letters, Nature Communications, Proceedings Royal Soc. B, or Trends in Ecology and Evolution.
