Biography
Nilan Jayasiri obtained his Bachelor's degree in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering and Master's degree in Geotechnical and Earth Resources Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. After working as a Research Assistant in the same department at AIT for over a year, he then moved to Perth and started working as a Geotechnical/Tailings Engineer, where he was responsible for designing of tailings storage facilities, undertaking field investigations and conducting risk assessments. Nilan is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Western Australia (UWA), Perth. At UWA, Nilan's research is focused on mine tailings stabilisation, which is one of the most pressing challenges when it comes to mine closure. Additionaly, his research interests include: (1) Mine waste management (2) Soft soil engineering and (3) Soft ground tunnelling.
