Biography

Nicole is an NHMRC Research Fellow in the School of Molecular Sciences (Room 1.27). She obtained her B.Sc double major in Chemistry and Biochemistry from The University of Sydney. Following 2 years of work in the Pharmaceutical Industry in Drug Research and Development, she went on to undertake her PhD in Chemistry at The University of Western Australia, which focused on the design of small molecules to target unusual nucleic acid structures. 

Following her PhD she was awarded an Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) Postdoctoral Fellowship to work at The Institut Européen de Chimie et Biologie (IECB), in Bordeaux France. where she conducted further studies on Unusual Nucleic Acid structures, mainly G-quadruplexes. She then undertook a postdoctoral position at The Australian National Unversity, in the Research School of Chemistry and returned to UWA in September 2012 where he worked in Experimental and Regenerative Neurosciences with her research being focused on studying the inflammation and breakdown of the Blood Brain Barrier and optimised delivery of drugs to the brain. 

Some current Projects in the group are listed below, these projects span Biological Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Genomics and Medicinal Chemistry:

1. Targeting Unusual Nucleic acid structures in Breast Cancer (Funded by The National Breast Cancer Foundation and Cancer Council WA)

2. Targeting G-quadruplex DNA as a novel therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's and Frontotemporal Dementia (Funded by The National Health and Medical Research Council)

3. Novel Mechanism-based enzyme inhibitors for the treatment of Neurotrauma (In collaboratin with Industry)
