Biography

I obtained my B.Sc double major in Chemistry and Biochemistry from The University of Sydney. Following 2 years of work in the Pharmaceutical Industry in Drug Research and Development I went on to undertake my PhD in Chemistry at The University of Western Australia, where I synthesized small molecules to bind unusual nucleic acid structures known as G-quadruplex DNA. 

Following my PhD I was awarded an Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) Postdoctoral Fellowship to work at The Institut Européen de Chimie et Biologie (IECB), in Bordeaux France. Here I studied Unusual Nucleic Acid structures, mainly G-quadruplexes, using biophysical techniques and cellular assays. I then undertook a postdoctoral position at The Australian National Unversity, in the Research School of Chemistry where I worked on the synthesis and functionalisations of Cyclodextrins.

I returned to UWA in September 2012 where I worked in Experimental and Regenerative Neurosciences with my research being focused on studying the inflammation and breakdown of the Blood Brain Barrier and optmised delivery of drugs to the brain. 

Current Projects in the group are listed below, these projects span Biological Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Genomics and Medicinal Chemistry:

1. Targeting Unusual Nucleic acid structures in Breast Cancer (Funded by The National Breast Cancer Foundation and Cancer Council WA)

2. Targeting G-quadruplex DNA as a novel therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's and Frontotemporal Dementia (Funded by The National Health and Medical Research Council)

3. Novel Mechanism-based enzyme inhibitors for the treatment of Neurotrauma (In collaboratin with Industry)
