Personal profile

Biography

I am Nicolas Maron, and I am currently a Senior Research Officer at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in the Astrophotonics group.

Originally from New-Caledonia, I studied Math and Physics at the University of New-Caledonia before moving to France. There, I graduated a double degree from the Institut d’Optique with an Engineer’s degree in Optics and Photonics, and from the University of Bordeaux with a Master of Science degree focusing on photonics and quantum technologies.

I then worked for three years as a PhD student at the Paris Observatory in the LNE-SYRTE group and at CNES, respectively the French metrology lab responsible for the national time keeping and known for its atomic clocks and the French Space agency. There, I demonstrated phase stabilised optical free space links for ultra-stable frequency transfer to a flying tethered balloon.

I joined the Astrophonics group at ICRAR in January 2024 and have since mainly been working on the TeraNet network project, primarily designing and building the optical payloads attached to our telescopes. I also contribute to the group many projects, participating in the development of our smaller aperture terminals for terrestrial laser link applications and helping our PhD students.
